Exercise is one of the keys to staying healthy, but as medical experts look at it, they want you to understand that preparing for workouts is crucial.  If you see enough people exercising, you realize that they don't take a lot of time stretching.  I've got to tell you, exercise is an important way to stay in shape and have a high energy level, and exercising regularly is great, but the best way to stay away from chronic health problems that put you in the hospital is exercising and also stretching.  Stretching is very important.  What you want to do is you want to stretch early on in the exercise process, about five minutes into it, and at the end of the exercising.  There's nothing more important than regular stretching.  You need to build slowly and it's more important you gradually build up to a relaxed stretch.  You don't want to do it all at once because people who do that run into big difficulties.
