Why do you need an allergist versus a family doctor? Well, here’s the big thing. You don’t always. Many times the family doctor can do a wonderful job at evaluating what you’re allergic to and dealing with it. You don’t necessarily need an allergist. An allergist, however, has more in-depth training in that area. They may not know as much as the family doctor does about heart disease or lung problems, but they do know about what causes allergies and how to deal with them. So, if you’re looking for a more specific type of treatment, I’d go with the allergist, but if you’re looking for a generalist, the family doctor is great.
